The teens for the cure is an organization comprised of a fantastic group of young women attending High School in Manhattan and vicinity, who have come together to join to in the fight of breast cancer. Many of us share a common bond of having watched our mother, grandmother, aunt or family friend go through the painful and devastating effects of this disease. Since breast cancer often affects the entire family, TEENS FOR THE CURE wanted to bring friends together where they can feel comfortable talking, laughing, and crying; a safe place where they can receive emotional support from their peers. Finally, TEENS FOR THE CURE empowers us to educate our peers and to make a difference by raising funds to support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
In 2005, we held our first “Tickled Pink” event that was sponsored and hosted by Diane Von Furstenberg and held at the DVF Studio in Manhattan. It attracted over 350 people and received loads of press coverage. Speakers included Miss America 2005, Chelsea Cooley, and the anchor Jane Hanson. The featured speaker was Geralyn Lucas who spoke about her best selling book, “Why I Wore Lipstick To My Mastectomy”. It was a night of mother and daughter, fashion and fun, and we raised more than $60,000 for Komen Greater NYC.
In 2006, “Tickled Pink” was held at Chelsea Art Museum. Once again, Diane Von Furstenberg hosted a fashion show, highlighted with breast cancer survivors and their daughters modeling her new spring line. Our sponsors included Seventeen Magazine, CBS2, Trish McEvoy, The MTV Store, and Z100 and guest speakers included Tamsen Fadal, Danielle Monaro and Carolina Bermudez from Z100’s Elvis Duran and the Z morning Zoo. Annabel Clark, daughter of actress Lynn Redgrave, spoke about their co-authored book, “Journal: A Mother and Daughter’s Recovery from Breast Cancer.”
“Teens for the Cure” also teamed up with Bette Midler’s Park Restoration Project to plant a garden of pink flowers in memory and in celebration of those who have battled with breast cancer. A total of $116,000 was raised and we are determined to increase that number thIs year!
Our third ”Tickled Pink” fundraiser will be our biggest one yet and will be held on April 20th, 2007 at “The Peter White Studios” in Manhattan. We are very excited and the Committee is already busy starting to work!
